spout Screenshot abstract caveflier/shooter

“Spout" is a small, abstract shooting game from Japanese developer kuni. It plays somewhat like Finnish cavefliers, except you have to erode your surroundings with your ship’s exhuast. It’s great fun :-) Your goal is to fly upwards as long as you possibly can, without crashing or your time running out.
This is a Unix port; the game was originally written for Windows.

Great concept, even if the game looks like it's made for a low res grayscale screen...
BTW for the comment below, check the README : "Exit - shift+escape".
Ok it's a bit unusual, but having to read the manual is not :)

It was indeed originally designed to run on a 4 colour LCD screen :-) So, this is its second port; as a result, the code isn't as readable as it could be. I still don't understand all the graphics code, so it could be quite a while until any graphics improvements are made...

Spout compiles OK on Solaris Ultrasparc posted by georgie @ 64.36.73.34 on Jul 18 2004 3:03 AM 4444
"Spout 1.2" builds fine on Solaris UltraSparc after some minor tweaks, like renaming the "time" symbol in spout.c to anything else so that it doesn't conflict with Solaris' /usr/include/iso/time_iso.h. A global search and replace is good enough...This is the error I got before renaming it:

sparc% gmake
...
...
spout.c:65: error: `time' redeclared as different kind of symbol
/usr/include/iso/time_iso.h:91: error: previous declaration of `time'
gmake[1]: *** [spout.o] Error 1

BTW, you might need to run autoconf, and autoheader...after that, the game compiles A-OK! The game is a lot of fun, perhaps some sounds or color would enhance it even further? =)

Cheers!

I can't wait for resizing/fullscreen. Vector graphics would be nice too.

You can now play in fullscreen or different window sizes with the newest release :-)

I _think_ spout should be playable with a joystick or gamepad, but I haven't tested it.
It doesn't work with my joystick. SDL has some functions for dealing with them.

fun for a little while. I ended up renaming the archive from tbz2 to tar.bz2 to get it to open. Anyone know how to play it in full screen?

There's not yet any functionality to resize the window / play in fullscreen, but I'm considering adding it :-) (by the way, there's no reason why you should have had to rename it, .tbz2 is a pretty well recognised extension for bzipped tarballs)

I, for one, have never seen that extension before, and have been using Linux since 1995, and using Linux exclusively since 1998. In addition I've worked for multiple Linux companies, and submitted various patches to various free software projects.

So no, I'd say it's not a broadly recognized extension, unless you mean that it's pretty easy to figure out, which it is. But if bzip2 doesn't recognize it.. why use it?

Oh... well, I'd seen it numerous times before, so I just assumed it was generally accepted (it's just like .tar.gz == .tgz, a Google search for tbz2 gives about 36,900 results...) And 'tar -xjf spout-unix-1.1-r2.tbz2' works just fine, which is typically how one extracts a tarball (tar -xzf for gzipped tarballs, tar -xjf for bzipped tarballs). But, if more people recognise tar.bz2, then so it shall be named :-)

Seen it before and tar does extract it without errors. If you were using a graphical extractor like ark you may have problems. It was a good idea to rename it though because some people obviously have issues with different things.

Good god, who cares about the choice of file extension. Do you think an international newspaper advert is required.
