If you enter the filename raw-0.1.1.tar.bz2 into Google and select the Spanish GPX32 forum link that is returned, one of the posts has the file attached which I have just downloaded but not yet tested due to being at work on Christmas... :-(

I own an original Atari ST version of Another World but why be restricted to running in an emulator? Use less CPU and save a little bit of energy running native!

does raw support "Heart of the Alien" ? posted by Anonymous @ 132.239.95.137 on Jul 15 2004 5:20 PM
"Heart of the Alien" is a sequel to "Another World". Unfortunately it is for SEGA only, so it requires an emulator to play it on PC.
I wonder if it is possible to make raw support "Heart of the Alien"? I very hope that "Heart of the Alien" use a game engine similar to "Another World".

P.S. You can download "Heart of the Alien" for free at http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=3180

No, raw doesn't support "Heart of the Alien".
That is simply due to the fact that the engine used in this sequel isn't exactly the same as Another World. Even if it uses the same opcode interpreter (with an extended opcode table, AW has only 0x21 entries whereas HOTA has 0x8D), there are still some major differences. For example, the graphics, which rely on sprites and not on vector data...

i can't tell you the easy solution, because it would include downloading so called 'abandonware' -> so i didn't tell you the following: try getting a different version off the internet (there are several versions out there which have different bank* files) the harder, but totally legal solution: maybe someone can fix that error for your versions with a little diff file?

Try the one at DOS Games Online which has the bank01 size and checksum noted above and which was successful for me. Note that you'll have to fix the capitalisation of the files.

RAW on Solaris UltraSparc posted by georgie @ 64.36.73.34 on May 24 2004 11:12 PM 55555
The RAW engine compiled fine on Solaris UltraSparc by adding  the entry:

#include "SDL.h"

into main.cpp as suggested somewhere in one of the comments below! Thanks!!! The game plays really well, but it's a pity that the development had to come to an end so suddenly...! It was good while it lasted! Thanks to the author for his effot put...definitely it'll not be forgotten...! *sigh*
The game really brought back tears in my eyes from a happy past where playing games was (and still is) the best thing to do...!

Cheers! =)

The engine was stopped because the original author asked for it.
So, you want ignore it and bring open source games again the smell of warez?

  why ?? posted by Anonymous @ 213.118.248.57 on May 24 2004 3:02 PM
Can someone please explain what could be the reason for discontinuing the project ? The message on the homepage is quite cyptic to me. (He got a mail and decide to abort the project because one is planing a re-relases ??) I don't see whats wrong with this project at all ? It's not like he's distributing the data files. You still need the original game. Also if there's no illegal stuff in there I don't see why anyone couldn't continue the project since he already GPLed it.
So these are some of my poor guesses
  • maybe the code was not reversed engeneered but holds copied or copyrighted code ??
  • the author got threatend and just backed off ? (I would doubt that, since he worked on scumvm and lucasarts doesn't seem like less of a problem )
  • the author got a real nice contract to help bring this back to live and decided to take it (I hope for him thats the reason :-))

Anyone has better guesses or any first hand info ? Cyx do you read this ? Any reason why someone else shouldn't continue this one ????

Maybe the author of raw is just a nice guy, and when the developer of this game, which he clearly loves enough to code a new modern engine for asked him to stop, he was nice enough to oblige? Some people don't need to receive legal threats to do someone else a favor.

As far as I know Eric Chahi himself is planing to rerelease the game for GBA and he is also planing to release the PC version for free soner or later, currently he is studying the legal issues of this (who owns copyright and such). So just waiting a few weeks/month might give us more details on how the future of Another World will look like and maybe we will even see Another World getting rereleased as freeware.

And while its sad to see RAW gone for now, remember that the original game author itself requested the project to 'disapear', it wasn't some legal department of some big-corp that sends out random 'cease and desist' letters as it was in some other cases.

Grumbel has a point - at least it was the wish of the author, not a threat of a big mean company. And if the rest of Grumbel's post is correct, we still might have a chance to see raw live in its fullest ...well, untill then, i guess we can always emulate it ...be it as a dos or a snes game :]

Well seems like he's to nice, really. Even if the original author is planing to release everything later on, I can't see why it should go away for now. If what gets released is better or equivalent raw will be fastly forgotten. If not than raw is needlesly put on hold.
The fact that how something is asked (original author nicely asking versus cease and decist of big corp) influences the final desicion making iso what is asked , is understandable but not really wise. Would you stop emulating sam&max in scummvm if george lucas himself came nicely asking to stop it because he's planning to re-release sam&max or working on sam&max2 ? (do you see where this leads to already :-)) If you're the one coding the emulation in that case I would say it's a nice gesture towards george to stop coding but there's no reason why other people should feel the same about it. As soon as a graphical improved cross-platform version is released by george you could start the discusion about wether its worth maintaining/keeping the emulation. Untill then removing the emulation is a waste of past effort with no extra merrit it seem. ahb (=a heartless bastard ?)

Probably it will only be released on GBA or something like that... But did anyone save the files before they where taken down, i am really interested in the source code for linux for version 0.1.1. I would and i think many others will be very grateful i someone upload them somewhere. :) /Tomas

There is no problem to find the game on the warez sites but they force to close the page with rewritten engine :( Too bad. I can only hope things like this are still legal in Europe

I have reverse engineered The Lord of the Rings by Interplay, I wonder when they will force me remove it.

Anyway great game and raw reproduces it perfectly. Can someone post a link to raw-1.1?
