Is this project dead? posted by Anonymous @ 217.83.150.221 on Sep 10 2003 12:27 PM
It is now over 3 months since this project was founded. There is no release yet, the open source rule is release often! Sorry but this is one more dead open source game project.

No, the project is not dead, it's actually quite active. Check the savannah page for instance. We are trying to remove as much wc2-specific stuff as posible, and it's not that easy. Expect a release in about two more months (this is planned).

Yes, it is dead. The two months are over and there is no release. There are no excuse for no release. No of the listed games seems to live, even some links are dead. I wish everbody a nice year 2004.

I find it sad that people expect so much change in such a short period of time.

FC was shutdown for a number of reasons, and people think that you can just release something the same again. You just can't you need to make changes. And like many opensource projects, there are very few developers on this project. From the outside it may look inactive, but log yourself onto irc, and checkout latest CVS to see what it's like.

Currently there is a feature freeze for a release, but again due to the limited number of people involved in the project, it's not easy to test everything and make it work fast. However there have been a number of good stable games played recently.

I understand people and yourself want results, but I think they are delivered as fast as they can be from this project. If you are really interested, you would investigate the last time news was submitted on the savannah site, what the status of the project is, and maybe join IRC if you can't find out what's going on. But you can make your own choices, you can just say, no release = dead project, but it's not true.

I downloaded the magnat game, which runs on the stratagus engine. I like it and I hope many more similar games will be made. Best things in life are free, but sometimes it takes time before you get it!

Hi, long-time reader, first-time poster.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm very happy with this turn of events. Now, don't get me wrong, I think Blizzard was abusing the law when they gave Freecraft the C&D smackdown, but I'm pleased with the direction the project has taken as a result.

All too often, it seems to me, we in the free software community end up making nearly identical copies of commercial software, which I must confess, confuses me. Here we are, with very little stake in the success or failure of a project, and yet, we're doing things typical of some of the least creative companies.

That's why I'm glad that the Freecraft project has become Stratagus. I looked into adapting the Freecraft engine at one point, but found that quite a bit has been hard-wired into the code. I hope that with Stratagus, folks will be encouraged to create new, innovative RTS games.

Stratagus ...?? Robovasion, Profit! posted by tomble @ 195.92.194.16 on Jul 8 2003 2:38 PM
Hurrah!

So does that mean we might see something happening with the Robovasion project soon? Or does Stratagus need more done to it first before work can even begin on Robovasion?

The first release of RoboVasion and probally quite a few of the later ones will use Stratagus in its current state with only minimal modifications, so no alpha-blending, OpenGL support or funky stuff like that, tiles will be 32x32 and so on, so don't excect anything revolutionary. Beside that RoboVasion is already pretty far, nothing playable, but the tileset is nearly done, units are mostly done, some stuff for the story also exists. Just a matter of polishing the stuff and packaging it up with some missions (which also exists as sketches), shouldn't take all that long until something playable is there. Check the RoboVasion Webpage for more infos.

Hehe, for days I'd been looking back at the Robovasion site, wondering how long it'd take before there was anything to see. It was hard to shake the feeling it was vapourware!! But hey, there's an actual screenshot now, cool.

Hope the good progress continues, and good luck Grumbel!
