Starting life as a compulsory project, this has grown into a fairly slick-looking 3D flying shooter. Featuring impressive graphics, big explosions, openal sound effects and semi intelligent enemies, this has lots of promise. It reminds me a bit of a souped up version of Starfighter 3000 (for all you Acorn devotees out there!).

| The game itself is very good, but getting in to it can be a problem on some systems. However, they are working on it as best they can, and along with improvements to the game itself it is rapidly becoming more optimized, less prone to crashes, and easier to compile. | |||||||||||||

| Reaper 0.98 on Solaris UltraSparc... posted by georgie @ 192.9.25.21 on Apr 2 2002 2:16 PM | ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| Reaper 0.98 DOES compile on Sol8 UltraSparc...(the GNU autoconf thingy made life much easier than the previous versions of Reaper!) I've tried it on an Ultra2, Sol8, Creator3d frame buffer, Sun OpenGL 1.3, STLport (more info on where to get it on freshmeat.net), gcc 2.95.3 (from the Sol8 Companion CD)...the graphics R AWESOME, but as stated on Reaper's official website, the game is still slow on UltraSparcs...as it is still not optimized for Solaris yet! =( The good thingy is that the developers will try to tune the game more for Solaris!!! yeh!!!!!!!!!! I never got OpenAL to compile on Solaris, so to start Reaper (once compiled), I use the "-f" option to bypass menus/openal, or use this suggestion that I got from the Reaper's developers... Create a data/config/hw_snd_system file, containing this line: "sound = dummy" (without the double quotes)... I am looking forward to seeing future versions of Reaper! hopefully supporting SDL for easier cross-compiling! =) This is a game with excellent potentials! Cheers! Georgie's SOLARCADE | |||

| Run under Debian posted by Anonymous @ 203.59.185.161 on Feb 6 2002 1:00 AM | |||||||||||||
| I can't get this thing to run under Debian. I have mesa set up and can run other OpenGL games. I get this: error in loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: Cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I'm pretty sure libstdc and libc6 are installed. Perhaps they need upgrading (but I have the latest available for Debian already)??? Darrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can anyone help? | |||||||||||||

| You can change the default resolution of the game in data/config/hw_gfx (make a copy of hw_gfx.defaults and remove the ext). You can also add 'fullscreen=true' there. Might work better for you voodoo-people?
However, if reaper says 400x300 it means that it couldn't find a hardware accelerated mode and tries in software. Please use the mailing-list (reaper3d-devel@lists.sourceforge.net) to report all problems on starting/running Reaper, as well as comments about game play/feature requests/ etc... |

| This game is probably wonderful running, however no documentation seems to be provided, and even trying reaper -h or --help provides no feedback on how to enable OpenGL use under Linux - despite the fact that it's obviously linked to the GL libraries. More information in the FAQ on -running- the game, or an appropriate readme, would be rather helpful. If you're interested in using the source, note that every build method provided seems to fail under RH Linux (even on how to g++). A future version may address these difficulties, and make it easier for new player to get it to run at a decent framerate. | |||||||||||||
