Oolite Screenshot An Elite-like game

Oolite is an open ended game, based around travelling from star system to star system as a lone wolf trader or bounty hunter or pirate or ...any role the player chooses; there is no set goal apart from perhaps to gain the coveted Elite combat rating. Whatever the player chooses, danger lurks - the Police may come to your aid, but with the size of space, they may take their time. Or if the player is less than legally clean, the Police might only be coming to finish them off...

There are several missions, and the game is expandable and many expansion packs and mods are available.

The game is an independent interpretation and re-creation of the classic game, Elite. Oolite was originally written for Mac OSX in Objective-C using Cocoa, and has been ported to Linux using GNUstep and SDL. The game is still under active development on both Mac OSX and Linux.

Unfortunately many OXP's are intentionally unlicensed. Unfortunately as much as this game continues to improve it has been unable to break from its elite-clone roots, and gameplay/interface/presentation are intentionally the same. For both these reasons it cannot be 4 stars. That does not stop it being an essential part of Gaming on any Platform.

Why would they want to refocus a successful project away from its goal? "Being an elite clone, but with more stuff" is the whole purpose of oolite, and it's what everyone working on it is there for. If you want something that's not an elite clone, maybe you should try a different game.

A small tutorial would be nice. I couldn't make scripts work, manual docking is impossible.

See http://wiki.alioth.net - there's lots of stuff about how to play the game there. Also you can ask questions in the Oolite BBS at http://aegidian.org/bb

It'd be nice if there were an option for both the purists and those seeking a more arcade-y feel. The argument that "in space, you'll really be spending 30 minutes flying from planet to planet" is just annoying. I find myself editing the ship file and cheating, but it really doesn't make me feel any better. (after all, i'm cheating) I like trading, and upgrading ships, but I really don't have the patience to wait forever, or deal with the annoying laws of physics. while it is an acquired taste, it never hurts to enhance the flavor a bit, or at least some extra toppings for those who desire it.

This game is definitely not for everybody. The hyperdrive feature is really impractical as it stops whenever an object or vessel comes to close proximity of your ship (which is mostly all the time). I found myself putting the game in the background and chatting on IRC, as I waited for my ship to get clear of whatever obstacle that was making my hyperdrive inoperable. After half an hour of gameplay, I've visited three systems and was on my way to the fourth when two pirates decided to blow me out of the cosmos. On the bright side, the game runs pretty well and docking to rotating stations isn't that big of a deal as people make out it to be (though, I wish it could've been made simpler).
I haven't played any of the original Elites, so I think it would be unfair of me to rate this game, as it's meant to be a faithful remake of the original, so I'll leave the ratings to the people who've actually played them.

P.S.: I heavily reccomend installing the Hal's Hot Sister OXP, as this gives you more audio feedback via a synthesized (or edited?) female voice.

Avoid the busy space lanes to avoid getting your hyperspeed mass-locked. Instead of flying straight for the planet, hyperspeed away from the witch space beacon at 90 degrees to the space lane between the beacon and the planet. Do this for a few seconds, aim back at the planet, and re-engage hyperspeed and you'll miss most of the busy space lane. When you have witch fuel injectors, use those when you are mass locked (although this burns up your witch space fuel). There are times you want to be in the busy space lane, i.e. when you're looking for trouble!

The previous reply is correct but I would like to add that if you didn't slow down you could just fly by any and all pirates to the station, defeating the point of HAVING pirates. I want to dogfight on the way to the planet, not have a peaceful starry flight.

And this comes from a guy witch didn't played original Elite....

I have a felling that javascript is to bit heavy, Maybe Lua instead ?... Ahh I'll will stop whining now:>

Great game, with great addons (Space seems so rich with all this spaceships and spaceports). There is even a short story "Status Quo" set in Oolite universe. It really looks that it was made by people who loves original one Elite.

There's an issue with trampolining with SElinux, see the oolite.berlios.de page for more details.

Pretty good game posted by MaxPain @ 80.186.219.227 on Jul 25 2006 11:07 AM 4444
It's a pretty good game, but it feels a bit incomplete.. The trading for example, it feels a bit cheap to keep on trading in only computers and furs - one of the best paying goods - endlessly without the market ever cooling down. You get about 1400 credits profit from 35 tons of computers (costs a lot to buy though), which already buys you a beam laser. But I guess most games of this genre has this problem. The contracts may seem nice, but why haul around hundreds of tons of fur (mind you, the cargo bay is only 35 tons max in your starting ship, and you won't afford a new one in a LONG time) for just a lousy few hundred credits? But I guess these are just balancing issues.. The game IS however very fun in the beginning when you really have to struggle to even ship some food and finally get that long awaited beam laser. But once you have everything to your ship, there isn't much to do. This wasn't meant as a too harsh review; don't get me wrong, it's a good game, but it still lacks some polishing to make it interesting to play all the way to the "Elite" rating. But at the rate it's developed, I'm pretty sure it won't be too long before I'll give it a full five stars. If you don't care for this game too much, you might want to try out Privateer Gemini Gold instead. It's the same genre, but is more focused on story, and while you can't do all the cool things from Oolite like scoop up fuel from a star, it has some other nice things in store.

As for the carrier market - as you do more deliveries, your improving reputation will mean you see better jobs being advertised - for example, moving gemstones, precious metals etc. for much higher amounts of profit.
