Mindrover Screenshot Build and program a robot car.

By day, you're a researcher on Jupiter's moon Europa. In your free time you re-program the rovers to race around the hallways, battle it out with mini lasers and rocket launchers, and find their way through mazes. It's all in a day's work.

MindRover from CogniToy is the highly-acclaimed 3D strategy/programming game that enables players to create autonomous robotic vehicles and compete them in races, battles and sports. Starting with an empty vehicle, gamers add components such as sensors, weapons and engines. Players wire the components together and set their properties using an innovative visual programming system before entering the vehicles in the 3D competitions. Gamers may also share their custom robots over email or through website competitions.

Fun game at first but too limited. posted by Hornpipe2 @ 198.160.96.7 on Jan 5 2007 12:03 PM 333
I got hooked on programming games a while back and Mindrover used to be one I really enjoyed. Mindrover was cool because it offered 3d arenas and graphical construction of your robot. But at the end of the day, all that effort you put into making the classy 3d engine will look dated eventually, and your game has to rely on core gameplay to stay current.

Unfortunately, the gameplay of Mindrover wasn't there the way it was with RoboWar, Robot Battle, RARS, TORCS, AI Fleet Commander, or many of the other games I tried at the time. There wasn't enough flexibility in designing my bots, and I missed the complete scripting languages of really heavyweight programming games. Just placing parts around was too simple and limiting.

In short I find the game too limited for most serious players, and too dated for most casual players.

You can't get the Linux version without rebuying. Furthermore, the Linux version is not up-to-date. The latest Windows and Apple versions are 1.08. The latest Linux version is 1.07. We owe a debt of thanks (dripping with sarcasm) to LPG (Linux Game Publishing) for buying the rights to the Linux version of MindRover after the demise of Loki. For over five years, LPG has owned the rights and hasn't provided a single upgrade for what was once a wonderful game.

$3 for an update which doesn't change anything? only for support for maybe later updates? no way!

Okay, firstly it is £3. As in "pounds".. not that that's any cheaper though ;-)

But it's actually very reasonable, let me explain.
Firstly, what you recieve is _support for the game from LGP_ plus downloads for future upgrades and patches from LGP. And there will, of course, be such upgrades. They intend to get it up to date with the Windows version.
Secondly, I think the price is perfectly reasonable. LGP wont earn cash from the already sold Loki versions, so upgrading and supporting the Loki version for free would be a waste of time and money on their account.. They have to earn something for their efforts.
And I think this is the perfect way of doing it. And come on... It's not like £3 is _that_ much of a price, is it? :-)

is really killing me! .. why release a game for linux two times? I love the game and this has nothing to do with the game itself. LGP have to know that linux sales are that hige and releasing a already released game once more sounds very strange.

Look at it as continuing support for an existing game, rather than a re-release. I, for one hope LGP will continue this trend with other ex-Loki titles.

Wouldn't it be cool if they patched up Tribes2?
Garage Games has only been contracted to update the Windows version.

Tribes 2 has been patched. I probably still have the patch laying around if you can't find it online.

All the porting effort is already done by Loki, so the initial costs aren't all that high. Also, the game itself is not only absolutely great, but the sort of thing that doesn't get old six months after release. It doesn't depend on the latest graphics or furious high-fps gameplay, but will still be as enjoyable years from now.

I just got the full version in the mail today, and it's awesome. If you want a good thinking game, Mindrover is just what the doctor ordered. It's not Quake III, but it's tons of fun. ;)

Been playing the PC version for a while; very engaging, but if you get too far into it you see how broken the physics model is and how hard (impossible) it is to reuse parts of a rover design. It's a ton of fun, but a hardcore geek will hit its limits within a month.

You can share bots, but there isn't a metaserver so you can compete right on the spot.
