Legends Screenshot Online FPS reminiscent of Tribes

"Legends is a fast-paced first-person-perspective online multiplayer game. The game is designed to take advantage of the beautiful environments available from the Torque engine it is based on while still offering the breakneck pacing and variety of styles available from such classics as Quake and Tribes.
Gameplay is not the strafe-strafe-jump-strafe-shoot-strafe-run-like-hell style a lot of games espouse; the addition of a jetpack adds a third dimension of mobility that makes skill, forethought, and restraint necessities to winning.
Team sizes are going to be ideal between 10 and 15 on each side, and the network code will allow anyone with any bandwidth to play relatively smoothly. Game type offerings will range from the classic Capture the Flag to our own new type, affectionately called “Knockout”.
Plenty of maps will be provided by us, but the beauty of this game is its customization possibilities. Mission creation has never been easier, with a stable, full-featured editor integrated into the game engine itself. Skins, models, and effects can all be modified by the end-user with commonly available tools."

Update Function posted by Anonymous @ 147.71.3.6 on Nov 6 2007 8:12 PM
Have played legends for about a week now. Updated just after installing. Did another update yesterday (5 Nov 07) which downloaded one file for (not common file area). Afterward, the game started crashing to the desktop when hitting the Join Server button. The mouse cursor would disappear, forcing a new login session having to be started via the keyboard. After about 5-6 cycles of this, the game seemed to restart working normally again. Have no clue as to what might have caused above symptoms, other than the updated file?

  What's the point? posted by Anonymous @ 60.234.155.226 on Oct 11 2006 7:37 PM
I just don't see the point of making this game. It's proprietary, it's not as good as Tribes 2, and both can be downloaded for free.... What is the point? If this was free software, then I would see a reason, but why make a proprietary clone of another proprietary game that can also be downloaded for free?

Perhaps because it's done around proprietary Torque game engine? I personally salute anyone who makes the effort to release a game for GNU/Linux platform, be it proprietary of free (although the latter is preferable option, but in this case obviously a no-go).

Same ol' same ol' posted by Anonymous @ 68.107.162.236 on Jul 6 2006 5:03 PM
This is the same stuff as a dozen other games/first person shooters.. I see very little difference except that the play area is ALWAYS hills and/or water, never changes to anything else. It's boring. I mean, hell, unreal tournament is a hell of a lot more interesting. This is a nice job for a linux game, please understand that, but there are a ton of these games coming out for linux and this is just an image of all the rest. I really do appreciate the effort someone has put in this for linux users, and we really need games for our OS, but this isn't much different from 3 or 4 other games found on game tome for linux. Great effort, and believe me I really do appreciate this. But we need to advance beyond the quake type games and move on to something else. These are getting boring as hell.

I can't agree, no, the gameplay is completely different to quake-like fps games, notably you fly using a jetpack, and combined with "skiing" (slides on ground when holding jump key down) can go very fast, far, and high on large scale playfields. As a bonus this game is free (of charge) and has quite light hardware requirements.

A fun game with a really steep learning curve. Most people leave in under an hour. The folks that stick it out get good after a month or two. Having played tribes before is a real help.

Not enough people play this game to make it fun all the time. If you manage to find a time when a server is active, though, you can have some fun.

Yes, it's closed source, and yes the guy who moderates the forums is in severe need of an attitude adjustment, but it's worth it.
Most people leave in under an hour.
They leave because it's the same thing they have been offered for a long time. We need new ideas.

What is your deal? It's a Tribes clone. There are only two FPSes like this -- Tribes, and Tribes 2. Get a new hobby! I know, it's hard. Just try coming up with a new idea for something to do with your free time, and then do it.

Well said. There's no similarity between Tribes/Legends and other FPS's. Remember, they're the only FPS-z's on the market.

  version 0.4.1.39 posted by Anonymous @ 66.45.208.242 on Mar 19 2006 8:14 AM
A number of new changes were introduced in this new version of Legends. Some were bug fixes. Others were totally unasked for by players, such as increases in gravity and other changes. Unfortunately, this change, and other non bug fix related changes, have given this game a step backwards in gameplay. The game, as it is in this version, is just not as much fun to play as it was in the earlier version.

The new gravity feels better and more to the spirit of the Original tribes - the gravity you were used it too is just some random moon walking sim with zero skill skiing, you just hold down spacebar and zoom off at 1 million miles an hour. At least now it is skilled. A lot of people asked for it and they did it, congrats.

Has someone else seen a blank screen when starting Legends. I can hear audio (cool) but I get a full blank screen. nVidia driver version: 1.0-8174 Fedora core 3. Is there a work around or solution written down publically? Searched this web site and Legends'.

Why bother making a near exact clone of Tribes and making it proprietary?

If it was Free Software (open source) then I could see the point.
Unfortunately I just can't see the point of this and because it's proprietary I won't be playing it.

From some pages back in these comments:
"the engine is licensed so there is no source for the 3D, but the SCRIPTS ARE OPEN TO USE. it IS a free game you weenie, don't ever say it isn't!"

It's not their fault - they're just using a closed engine (Torque). They can't really make the game 100% "Open Source".

I think it is their fault that they are using torque. It isn't anyone elses fault. They should have used an open engine in the first place. I wonder though if they could get torque licensed under a free software license though. If this game was free software is would be cool.

hehe..maybe you should get your lazy ass up and program a game on yourself instead bitching at people doing this for free and for the community.
I can'T understand peole like you..and i don't want to, actually.

It's gratis, it's only free in terms of money.
Honestly I don't even see the point, if you want to run proprietary software, then just download tribes original, it is gratis also and runs perfectly in wine.

They seem to be trying to replicate the Tribes experience, make it multiplatform, and improve upon it in a way that the community would want. How is that pointless?
