Nice graphics. There isn't much material in it, but everything is high quality. Is the game supposed to be playable with joypad? Doesn't work for me.

Also, ability to enter buildings would be nice.

Battles are nice visually, but gameplay sucks. The main thing lacking is that you don't have a clue which attack would do what kind of damage. I believe that the battle system doesn't require too much changes to make it work like the one in HOMM3. That would be really nice.

So, I'd rather not give it 4 stars now. I'll wait to see improvements and give it 5.

Joypads should work, yes. Mine works for me (Logitech Wingman Extreme), but I haven't had any other gamepads/people to verify with me or not whether joypads do indeed work for them as well. If your joypad isn't supported by SDL, then there's nothing we can do about that unfortunately.

But the joypad I have (Genius MaxFire G08XU) works without any problems in other games like Njam2 or Secret Maryo Chronicles. I just tried once more, and it seems to work in menu, but not properyl - and doesn't work during game at all. I've seen this problem before with some other games, so it could be problem with my Linux kernel and the way the game is initializing the joystick.

I have recently made some improvements to the joystick code. It works with my x-box controller. It worked for some other devs too: http://www.allacrost.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1899 . Try it again, and I bet it will work for you now.

Hmm it can't use Lua 5.1 or newer. :/ I look forward to trying it out once this is fixed.

You have to install Lua 5.0. Lua 5.1 isn't yet compatible with the Luabind library, and hence does not work with Allacrost just yet. Hopefully the Luabind people will get a 5.1 compatible-release out soon...

Thank you for the reply, unfortunately I need Lua 5.1+ for other software I use....

You can install both. Lua 5.1 and 5.0 get along nicely together.

one for all and all for an awesome game! posted by SDark @ 193.137.94.3 on Jun 12 2007 1:59 AM 4444
Have you considered something like merging with the "The Mana World" team? I noticed that some screenshots have enemies that are the same from TMW. The gameplay seems similar with the exception of the battle modes.

Both games have features that if merged would make a better game.

The Mana World has network play and so longevity. They are aiming for their own custom server. Also they are building up features for better graphics (like particle engine).

Hero of Allacrost has gorgeous graphics, and the fight style of Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, ... series (this might be tricky to implement in multiplayer). Besides HoA has the single player mode that lacks in TMW.

From my point of view it would be a good choice (if possible) to consider merging both games, or at least some of the features. Since they complement themselves. Potential good games are quite rare in free/opensource games specially in linux. And I prefer one awesome game than two very good ones.

Need a map/game editor, that way we could use the engine out of the box, create a decent set of network libraries, and create one really wicked game. not that this game isn't already wicked.

We have had our own editor for quite some time and eventually we'll make it available, but right now its very basic and quite quirky with regards to working cross-platform (it makes use of the QT4 GUI libraries).

19 developers, C++ with Lua, SDL, yes, looks like a good starting point. And artwork created so far is very nice. Battle for Wesnoth was much worse when they started and look at it now. I'm looking forward to first beta and then I'll rate it.

Gorgeous... This game is just beautiful... If it was multiplayer too, it'd be perfect.

I agree, Multiplayer would be nice, Open Source software has too few nice looking multiplayer RPGS.

Meh, the last thing I want to make is a MMORPG. I don't think they are fun, and it would be a hell of a lot harder to make this game multiplayer (not to mention it would take much longer to get releases out the door). The only single-player RPG that I know of with a style similar to Allacrost is Adonthell, and I believe that project is pretty much dead at this point. :(

I'm really excited about this game! Thanks for making it! I have been looking for this sort of RPG for linux for quite some time. The artwork looks REALLY high-quality, too. Very unusual for an open-source project.

Art Licence? posted by Anonymous @ 203.56.62.4 on Oct 4 2006 2:09 PM
Hey just wondering about the license for the artwork, is it also GPL? Would be cool if it is, a singleplayer RPG is great for story telling, but a multiplayer version would be cool too, so if you guys aren't planning to do it, it'd be cool if the artwork can be freely used for in a multiplayer game by another group.

The art is licensed under the GPL right now, although we may change that because I don't believe the GPL is a good license for anything but code. We do take a small portion of our artwork from Battle for Wesnoth as well though. I wouldn't mind if someone wants to make a multiplayer version of our game using our artwork (heck, they could just use our engine and stick a networking component in it). I will admit that I'm not exactly happy when the same set of artwork is seen in multiple and completely disconnected games though. I would hate to play games that looked almost entirely the same. :(

Well for now I would recommend keeping the artwork under the GPL if you want this to get past the DFSG. The Creative Commons licenses have a terrible flaw in them, which should hopefully be fixed in version 3.
The artwork is truely beautiful anyway. A wallpaper would be really nice. ;-)

I would recommend to not consider DFSG. These nitpickers at debian are completely insane about licenses. Heard of what they've done with firefox logo?

Well the mozilla guys requiring all patches to go through them first is a bit annoying. But it's just to make sure that their name doesn't end up looking bad. I understand both sides, think they are both equally valid.

The thing about Debian and the CC licenses are here... I think it's kind of valid, but don't completely agree with their conclusion. http://people.debian.org/~evan/ccsummary.html

Runs nicely on FreeBSD, port is already in the Ports Collection. I guess, as this is only demo for now, suggestions won't be much useful, so I'll just say thank you and keep up the good work!

Really great game, couldn't get it running on my laptop, but that's probably something to do with Compiz/Aiglx messing it up.
Got it running on my friends Apple Laptop though and it is beautiful, really nice artwork and the music is good. Looks like this will be a great game!
