Gate 88 Screenshot A fast-paced, frenetic blend of RTS and 2D space shooter

Warcry.com describes Gate 88 as a “fast-paced, frenetic blend of real-time strategy and 2D space shooter.” Players dogfight in an upgradable command ship while developing base defenses, issuing squadron attacks, and researching new technologies. Though Gate 88’s abstract vector-art is unabashedly old school, Gamehippo.com says, “the gameplay is anything but retro. It’s new, fresh, and exciting.”

Although a singleplayer mode is included, the game's focus is on multiplayer.

Great game. very good mix of game styles and well thought out way of giving you information about the game without the need for clutter on screen.

Fun, innovative, easy to learn and play. posted by shapr @ 81.224.147.69 on Dec 20 2005 11:33 PM 4444
I like this game, it's hard to mix both arcade and real time strategy in a way that's enjoyable.
I do wish the game were open source, but that doesn't detract from the fun of the game at all.
I think the RTS facet of the game could use some fleshing out, it seems like an excellent beginning, with lots of potential for extension.

I love this game. And it's free! It's a mix between a 360 shooter and a RTS, with buildings, a tech tree and all.

I love this game! It's perfect for quick relaxation. The game is simple enough to be picked up quickly and games are not too long. Yet, it takes a little while to get good at it. Highly recommended.

Innovative, yet uneven posted by emceelam @ 67.180.239.194 on Apr 2 2005 12:38 PM 4444
This game is an innovative mix of RTS and Kobo. Not only must you build a base and prepare an offensive strike group, you must also fight as an individual pilot. However as an RTS, the features are a bit weak. The base building becomes formulaic as all the player bases look pretty much about the same. The offensive units are merely fighter and bombers, so the attacks on bases are formulaic rushes with support from your primary ship. Even though the RTS aspect is a bit formulaic, the graphics have this interesting retro feel and the ship you pilot does require skill and strategy to maximize it's effectiveness when played as part of a larger fighter rush.

Wow. This is a truly innovative game! My respect to the author.

It would be great if this game would become Free software sometime.

Runs really ugly here... posted by Anonymous @ 84.161.178.155 on Mar 23 2005 6:51 AM
...on my Debian/Testing machine. It's an Athlon 3000 (2.166 GHz) with 512 MB RAM using a Geforce 6600GT at 1024x768 Pixels. No, now I'm sure: this has to be a bad joke.

We run it here on 3 different boxes, the most powerful being a mere Athlon XP 2000+ with an ATI Radeon 7500. No problem in 1024x768 mode. What do you mean by "ugly" ?

I meant "not playable" - nevertheless, I *REALLY* like this genre and hope that this will be fixed soon. When I press a key in the menu, it take 2-3 seconds until something happens. And when I enter a text string I often have to press several keys more than one time.

The shell script rungate88.sh includes a libGL that is AFAIK based on software rendering. Start gate88 directly with its main executable. If that does not work for you try removing the libGL.so.* from the game's lib directory and run it via the script.

I tried both my own, and of course, first the included libraries.

The bad guy again: After reading your message twice I noted that I am a dumbass. Re-downloaded, re-installed, used my own libGL's and now it runs as hell. I'm honestly excusing!
