This is a good game. I have played it since 2006. It does have its flaws, but every game does. It is listed as Beta too. If you have problems, there are forums for the game where you can get help. You can get help in the game itself by saying "#helpme " followed by what you need help with. Before February of next year, the game will be even better. It will have a new graphics engine and better spell and mixing options.

  Hmpf... Gfx broken since 1.8.0 :( posted by Zalmoxis @ 85.178.169.7 on Feb 15 2009 10:01 AM
Have Nvidia... Everything worked well until 1.7.0

Now everything 3d is black now; disabling fog makes things visible, but still no light sources work. Unplayable, or at least unenjoyable. Nobody else seems to have had that problem, no bug reports like that can be found on the EL forum.

Too bad. :(

This is in the license.
4. If you want to [re]distribute this game, you are NOT allowed to modify anything. You can, however, distribute some txt/doc/etc file, with information about you, etc.

So while you can get the source, it's not Free software, nor open source as defined by the OSI.

:( Then the source code is available but useless, you can only look at it but you cannot do anything with it, you have to forget what you can read. I don't understand why the authors lock so much what we can do with their game, it doesn't encourage people to contribute.

The answer is simple: money. They don't want a fork. AFAIK only clients source is public.

"License: free" means free as beer here on HappyPenguin. It would be nice distinguish freeware and free SW though.

If you like this sort of crap you need to get a real life. People with real lives work, eat and sleep on a daily basis, they don't need to simulate it in an MMORPG.

Neverwinter Nights is still the _BEST_ MMORPG, not only as native linux, but generally over all platforms. It uses the 3rd D&D revision which is the best roleplaying ruleset. It gives you the most amount of adventure for the least amount of wasted time.

Speaking of wasted time, if they only add tax forms and slow commuting this could turn into the best simulation of crappy everyday life ever. Want to slay dragons and become a hero? This game offers you to become a janitor, miner or farmer. Enjoy.

How paradoxical, first you talk about getting a real life, then you talk about another MMORPG which is obviously what you like the most. :) It is clear that you, for some reason, hate Eternal Lands. :)) And if you really care about real life, you would not waste time here discussing game you do not like! (How pathetic!)

I think you have missed the point: in EL after some time you find yourselves spending most of the time harvesting coal or mixing things up. It just asks for macros.

sconesntea, you clearly haven't played Eternal-Lands very much at all. Did you even find your way off Isla Prima? There are dozens of different monsters, including three different dragons. Last time I looked there were no janitors, and no farmers.

marduk, your assessment of the Eternal-Lands game world is skewed at best. People who like manufacturing items are going to spend a lot of time mining or harvesting ingredients. That is their choice. They can also pay noobs to harvest or mine for them. Many people spend their entire gaming time fighting creatures, monsters, or other players and never manufacture anything at all. That is also their choice. Yet other people do a bit of manufacturing, a bit of harvesting, and a bit of fighting. Nothing forces people into any one category, other than their own free will...or in your case lack of imagination.

I know people can develop various skills but even fighting creatures is quite boring. There are like 2 or 3 goblins and about 12 people hunting them. After some time game gets very repetitive, no matter what you do. BTW: do you really have to insult me?

You didn't read my post carefully perhaps? I have a real life, hence I'm not interrested in EATING, SLEEPING or WORKING in a game. While playing I want stuff that is nothing like my real life, not a somewhat boring simulation of it. When will they add a crap-o-meter, if you don't find a bush and take a dump it takes 1hp every 5 minutes? Like I said, if you want realism, it doesn't get any more real then actual real life.

Eating, sleeping and working every day is dull, it defeats the escapism I require from games. Sorry, it gets one star for being a boring game, that's my oppinion. Too bad all the free MMORPG's are made by nerds who get way too technical to the point where the games are more like simulations than games. D&D has the best ruleset and spells, NWN is still the best MMORPG with a native linux client.

By all means, play this "simulation" and enjoy it, I just didn't.

The best (native) Linux MMORPG posted by dejan @ 79.78.95.57 on Jan 11 2009 6:25 PM 55555
As subject states - this is definitely the best MMORPG which runs natively on Linux, with open-source client and closed source artwork, which is to be expected - we do not want same characters in other MMORPG games, right? It might lack fancy Regnum Online's graphics, but it has an amazing, ever-growing community (about 500 on-line players at each moment), unique features, and more importantly very active group of developers and story-writers. Role-playing is also very important part of the game, and there is a large RPG community, with their own channel. Eternal Lands also participates in charity events, something I highly respect.

I recently installed EL on my Debian box. Used 32 bit client. Had to tweak the video, by selecting the "poor mans" radio button, and limited the frames (FPS) to 60. Before I tweaked it I had 3000+ as a ping. After it went down to 147. So the client is tweakable depending on your system. I'm running an old Video card GeForce fx5200. Now I just need to figure out the sound driver..... Otherwise it works fine.

Eternal Lands 1.5.0 for linux no sound posted by Anonymous @ 81.8.153.238 on Dec 3 2007 2:12 PM
I have downloaded elc-150 linux version and the sound and music to it - when i try to enable the music it crashes with "illegal instruction" and the error log says :
Warning: ALC_ENUMERATION_EXT not found. Unable to retrieve list of sound devices.
i guess its a problem with ALSA or so but i am no expert and not really familiar with CVS too so get the source code wouldent be bad - to get a clue at Eternal Lands forum is a drag - its almost impossible ... i liked the old version and played alot but now i think it just take off place of my hard disk ...
