Dusk Screenshot A Java-based graphical mud

I used to work on Dusk back in 2000/2001 and when I checked back recently I saw that there was no Dusk game anywhere. I decided to revive Dusk and enhance it. It now features rich 16bit graphics with 800 images, a brand new storyline with the same old gameplay you loved about Dusk.

It is in beta testing still, so come by and check it out. I also need help with various aspects of hosting an mmorpg, so come if you can offer help too!

Additional System Requirements: java 1.3+ preferred but it will run in java 1.1

I am trying to get more people interested in Dusk that way maybe somebody will host it on their server and Dusk will be revived. A few months ago this guy libernullmal tried reviving Dusk but unfortunately his internet connection wasn't good enough for Dusk with him doing his usual stuff. I helped him by giving him a Duskserver that worked perfectly but if you can get me void Dusk's server files I would love to check them out.

How to run Dusk posted by xyphoidzach @ 76.26.78.4 on Jan 11 2009 5:59 AM
I have learned how to run Dusk on my ubuntu linux computer by talking to a old Dusk player "Wildern". I want to show everyone how to run Dusk and hopefully get more people interested in Dusk. Maybe someone would host it on their server and revive Dusk once again:) So I am going to explain how to run Dusk on ubuntu linux but it should be similar for all types of linux. The DuskServer7.3Runnable and DuskServer2.6.2.W38 saved on sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=51584&package_id=45480 are runnable but I have tested them and they both have lots of bugs. Wildern gave me a Duskserver that works perfectly so if you want a copy email me at scraggily@gmail.com. If there are any old Dusk players that have a DuskServer file send it to me so I can test it out. Follow these directions: 1. Use Ubuntu LTS Desktop Edition 2. Install Apache2 from the synaptic package manager and check to see if it works by going to http://127.0.0.1/ 3. Install sun-java6-jdk and sun-java6-jre from the synaptic package manager 4. Get the DuskServer that runs perfectly from me called "Dusk8.tar.gz? Extract it onto your home folder so you have a folder called "Dusk8". Go into the Dusk8 folder and click on the "WWW" folder. There is a client.html duskclient.jar file and an RC folder. That needs to go into /var/www/dusk but you need to make that directory first. To make the /var/www/dusk directory simply enter these commands in the terminal. "cd /var/www" then "sudo mkdir dusk" 5. In terminal go back to where the files are, something like this "cd /home/zach/dusk8/www" then enter this command "sudo cp -r client.html duskclient.jar rc /var/www/dusk". Going to http://127.0.0.1/dusk/client.html in the browser should get you the client (won't do anything because the server isn't running, but you should get the client) 6. Run the server by going to Dusk8 in the terminal like this" cd /home/zach/dusk8" and enter this command "java -cp . DuskServer". That should start the server. If it started up and no errors it would say "ready for connections". Play the game by going to http://127.0.0.1/dusk/client.html

Hey This is Free Again, I have fixed the problem with the images, stupid me. didn't have the right folder down in the Htdocs of APache.. Here is the thing though. I am running the Java JKE 6 it seems to run it just fine. and after great going through and choosing I chose the of course 2.6.W68 edition of course there is basically a basic part to this. I will be needing some gods and what not to build this place. I am trying to get in contact with Tom and seeing if he would send over the old mapped out one frum before Void and the others came into effect... hope he still uses that e-mail though :) As it is I'm messing around with it trying to remember how to do things. An I will keep you all updated as what will happen. When I have one up though, I am going to go platinum and hitting every way I can to making this a big hit, just as it was back then. Talk to you all later when I do. Those of you who said to keep in contact I will.

What do you Know posted by Anonymous @ 69.53.106.235 on Feb 21 2008 7:51 PM
Hey This is free (knights of Buddy Lee) and once I had one of these servers up myself. but with sharing my cable connection with 2 other people in my house with roommates it became quite a hassle with the connection part. it is now Feb 21, 2008 and I am looking to do this again this time, I have a full internet service and a couple of computers laying about waiting to be used. I of course can run Linux or some sort of BSD but I only know how to work those at a minimum :) I am also looks like needing some images because at the moment I log on with -1 images and 2 audios even though the images are there... the version I am using is 2.62.W68 which was what I believe I was running last time and it ran pretty well. Including the world had already been setup to a perfect t before DuskStar and some of the other dusks came out. I doubt anyone frequence this anymore since Dusk is pretty much plain gone... It does sadden me since this is a much better game than Runescape and other games like dark warriors (which is nothing but html in the first) So I will keep this under viewage as much as possible and hope that someone out there can help direct me or something.

  Dusk is Hosted Again -- ex-GMUDNet posted by Anonymous @ 69.207.26.135 on Jun 25 2006 6:46 PM
Hey everyone. http://gmud.net used to be my domain but it expired, I am actually hosting a full version of Dusk with some custom add-ons. It's hosted off of my main game development site at :

http://slothrpg.com/index.php?id=dusk

Ive had it running for a few weeks now and remembered that it was posted on this site. Hopefully some old fans of the game can enjoy it.

The server has a 99% uptime however there is a slight bug in the sourceforge.net release that causes some crashing. When I have spare time I will take a look at it.

Also, I downgraded the client to be an embedded JApplet. I just liked the nostalgia of the old days, '99-'02 ;). I also archived the old http://dusk.wesowin.org site at :

http://www.slothrpg.com/dusk/

Its a replica of the old site with every update and most of the links work. The client located on that site doesnt work however.

Enjoy!

the sourcecode for this game is available at sourceforge.net http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=51584 this was the best game ever and i wish i could play it again but i would have to revive it myself so i'm reading a book on JDBC. If anyone makes a dusk game be sure to advertise it on here-xyphoid

Hey xyphoid,
JDBC is the Java Database Connection API but Dusk's data storage system is flat. I am wondering if you were thinking of creating a MySQL based Dusk which would be very do-able. Is that the case?
