These 32-bit binaries are linked against libgtk1.2, which is somewhat hard to come by for a recent Ubuntu installation.

While I do really like the graphics I am a bit mystified as to what the point of the game is. Is it basically just an alien fishtank?

There's no ending or real point to the game. It's a life simulation. Your goal is to simply breed the creatures (called norns) and eventually create creatures that are much smarter then your first generation ones.

Now that I think about it, I think the first two games in the series gave you a lot more information about the genetics (and general state) of your creatures. The third game that docks into this one (hence "docking station"), gives you access to better tools to analyze your creatures, but I think that the first two games are a lot better at this.

The first two games in the series where Windows only (although I seem to remember at least the first one was runnable on Macs). Anyway, the first game was one of the first games I tried on WINE and unfortunately, it didn't make it far. Since the first two games heavily used the Windows API, I don't think there would much on an improvement today.

The best way to get the entire series running on Linux, would be to use the FLOSS engine in the thread below this one. It needs support too.

There's been a FLOSS engine for this game (and all other games in the Creatures series) for some time now.

Free as in beer or freedom, whutevva, but what is up with the registration bulls*it? I was going to download it, but the required registration just sucks too much. Too bad, this will probably lower their Linux user stats, but it's their own fault.

I agree, the registration requirement is annoying, but it's not too bad, all you need is a working email, for the rest of the info you can just fill in nonsense, but still the requirement is annoying.

I also thought that the parent poster hadn't found the "right" download link at first, but it's when you run the game you need to register.

Free/gratis vs Free/Libre is a flaw in the english language, not in the description of this well made game,
where everybody can, if they look at the License: description, that this game is not under a FLOSS license.

Completely FREE? Saying this in the GNU/Linux community when there isn't any available source code is just going to get people annoyed with you for abusing the term.

Yes and make sure FREE is written in all caps and if possible is flashing different neon colors.

it's not abusing the term. I didn't pay anything to get the binaries, it's a freeware, that's all. The word "free" is not reserved to the open source community, and it has several meanings: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/free About the game, the build-in URL are no longer valid (like http://ds.creatures.net/first_login.pl ). The new registration page is at http://www.gamewaredevelopment.co.uk/ds/active/register.pl (you need to register an account for playing this). Beside this, I didn't find this software really interesting, but I haven't spend much time on it.

Techncally maybe. But specifying "completely" seems to have wrong intentions. If at least they had said only "free"...

I don't see any intention at all. This old game was released in 1991 or so, and the notice on happypenguin is only a copy of the initial release.

The word 'free' is not reserved by anyone, and definitely not by open source community (maybe you meant free software community).
But in context of software, gratis software is called freeware and software giving you freedom is called free software.
