  A good start... posted by jacius @ 12.223.186.40 on Nov 19 2003 11:34 PM 333
This game could be very fun with a little bit more strategy. I find it is too simple to hold my attention for long. I notice that red sides are always top or bottom, and blue sides are always left or right -- why not have red sides on the left and right sometimes, and blue on the top and bottom sometimes? Also, what about more colors? Perhaps a green side would make it a bit more challenging. Then, you would actually have to think about where you will put the block to make it work best, instead of just finding a place where the block will fit.

[PS. I realize that on monochrome screens, as in Palm Pilots and other handhelds, you only have black and white (and maybe shades of gray), but you could still make more 'colors' by using patterns, for example stripes or dots.]

Also, explaining the purpose of the game, inside the game (perhaps via a "How to Play" button) would make it clearer what you are supposed to do. Right now, I think the goal is to put down as many blocks as you can, and especially to make solid colors touch the edge, because that will move the whole thing away from that edge, clearing a whole line to put more blocks in. This is a simple goal, though. How about bonus points for making patterns with the colors? Or a mode where you try to fill up the entire 5x5 grid with blocks?

I am not very fond of the sound effects, particularly the scrolling sound. They remind me of the beeps and toots made by Windows when something goes very wrong. I would like most a nice, smooth sound, rather than a harsh and loud sound.

I would also like to see a "New Game" button appear on the screen when you get a game over, and also make it clearer that you cannot put down any more blocks. Perhaps darken the main screen and have "Game Over \n Play again?" appear in nice big letters in the middle of the screen.

I do not want to sound like I have only bad things to say about this game, I am only trying to help improve it. It is a nice game idea, and reminds me of some good classic games like Dominos. I am impressed by how many platforms Devet will play on (partly due to the wonderful SDL, but you'll note that not all games that use SDL are even 'ported' to Mac). Just a few more improvements and this game will be really fun!

The goal of the game is to be maximum simple as rules. The two colors - blue and red are just for better visibility, actually there is no color matching in the game :) As can be seen on B/W version, this is a geometry-matching principle. Anyway, scores over 100 are hard to reach, so there is a challenge, even the simplicity. And the sounds are from a free source in internet (described in the .txt file in the /snd directory) and are really undistinguished - 3/10 for sounds :/
