From all the free source MMORPGs I've seen, this is the best so far ^^ Congrats!

An excellent project, and this is coming from someone who generally detests MMORPGs. I've been playing this one a lot lately, and it's probably the first time that I've booted into Linux to play a game (usually I do everything in Ubuntu except gaming). Does anyone know what would be considered an acceptable donation? I'd like to contribute something, but being unemployed it can't be much.

Oh, whatever you see fit. 5$? Sure. 10$? Sure. 20$? Hey, that's great. More food for the hungry coders :).

  What a great game! posted by releppes @ 74.39.135.225 on Apr 9 2007 11:22 AM 55555
I use to play Crossfire a long time back. This is a completely different game in terms of graphical appearance. Daimonin is to Crossfire what Falcon's Eye was to NetHack. What a major break through in terms of graphical design. Very very nice!

The only gripe I have is the mouse control. I play on a laptop, so the numpad is not really an option for me. The mouse control is very touchy. I haven't played the game that much, so I don't know if it's network related. The GUI is very nice and intuitive.

As a new player, all I can say is wow. Job well done!

BTW: I only gave 4 stars because I've not played many MMPOG games. That and I haven't played enough to determine if there's any bugs. As a newbe, it's definitely been a nice experience. Easy to setup and get going.

Read the HOW TO PLAY link on their web site. It there 3 times mentioned. Don't use numbers in your character name. And the website account its NOT your game name/game account.

Its a great game all and all, but rumours of it going "pay-to-play" are very worrying...

Complete bullshit!
Daimonin is an open source project and server, content & client are public avaible at sourceforge!!
Everyone can host a server, create maps or extend the game.
They only started to except project donations - totally normal for an growing open source project.
One point to do it was that the website server needed an upgrade because it was overloaded in the last weeks.
Also renting a good game server for the official project servers is an option.
But the donation rewards pissed off some of the so called power players who invested all their time in playing (for free of course) but zero time to help the project.
So, people whining here are the typcial "we want all for free but we are to sluggish to help" guys.
That you then come here and start talking bullshit like "pay to play"... Really, its a shame.
Go, play Tibia or Runescape - hack some player accounts then you can play for low too.

In the words of longir (one of the people close to the dev core of the game, linku~):

For those that may have trouble: you will NEVER be forced to pay a single penny, shilling, ruble, lira, or whatever to play. ... EVEN if you CHOOSE NOT to get a premium account or donate, you will still be able to get the FULL game experience for FREE.

Considering that Daimonin has its roots in open source development, it would be unethical of them to charge to play, and nobody seems keen on the idea. So we get to enjoy our free game. :)

What does that comment even mean? Honestly, I don't understand why anyone is griping about this game. It's a massive GUI improvement over the original Crossfire. I don't know about the pay for play issue, but even if the author(s?) charged for playing on their server, why is that a problem? Can people set up their own servers? I don't play the game enough to really care, but hearing people gripe about free stuff irks me. Is this part of some Crossfire vs Daimonin flame war or something? If you liked or played Crossfire in the past, then you should definitely try Daimonin. I found it to be a very nice GUI improvement. I can't give a lot of detail into gameplay as I've not played it much, but my 15 minute experience of going through the tutorial was positive enough. I bumping my initial rating from 4 stars too 5 stars. It's a great revival of an older game.

No, it's just not funny. Invoking Hitler's name as a comparative is an attack on another person. This can be especially offending to those who do stuff for free.

You seem to be humor-impaired. You must be a real downer at parties.

"Aw, sorry, man. I drank the last beer."
"Oh! That does it! Get the pitchforks, we're gonna burn 'im!"
"That's not funny! Burning someone alive is a terrible thing! How could you say that?"

Relax. Nobody has actually compared anyone to Hitler here. Please look up the meaning of "hyperbole."

And you my friend are no comedian. Humor has to be obvious. Your statement cannot even be distinguished from the sarcastic remarks issued by the free loader ingrates.

There's nothing wrong with charging for open-source-related services. Running the server costs money after all.

First of all you must run "sh configure". You also need the SDL development libaries. See here for complete Linux installation instructions

Install not only the SDL libraries, but the SDL development libraries. The package's name should be something like libsdl1.2-dev.
