While, on the face of it, AssaultCube looks pretty impressive, as cube mods go, the gameplay is flat and uninspired, you're much better off with Urban Terror for your real world themed team combat needs.
Tremulous, Blood frontier and Nexuiz are all much better contenders for the title of best linux FPS(ignoring commercial titles)

The weapons in Urban Terror are absolute crap, and it's probably the worst game I've ever played in terms of fun and dynamics.
Tremulous is quite good, but their lack of support is really detrimental to their image. I couldn't even get info on a 64-bit version, or how to compile it from source.
Blood Frontier is decent, but there are few people on, and the weapons are not balanced yet.
Nexuiz is not really my kind of game, it just doesn't have the right feel to it. I've never found it much fun.

Oh, and one more thing, I've never rated a game a 1 star here, only bots and shills would do that.

So, i'm either shilling behalf of some other open source game, or i'm a bot? How about people who are simply thoroughly unimpressed by the game? I'm staggered that someone would seriously consider it to be the best FPS game for linux, that almost sounds shill-like to me.
Assaultcube has its upsides, performance on old hardware is bound to be good, playability over poor connections is apparently reasonable and simple bot play might make for a bearable single player mode(though don't expect help from your team), it's just the simple run and gun tactics and odd feel that Cube in general has that let it down. Your massively positive comments only set people up for disappointment unless they haven't played an FPS since wolf3d. Maybe a port to the cube2 engine would improve the general feel of the game.

Accusing UrbanTerror's weapons of being absolute crap is a little strange, coming from an AssaultCube fan, it actually has a good range of different weapons available, players can mix and match, weapons actually behave quite differently from one another and have different levels of damage appropriate to their firepower. AC may be similar but it's not something i've ever picked up on from playing the thing, there are only 6 weapons including the pistol and knife.

Okay, maybe you're not a shill, you're just a dummy.

Okay, now this is totally a secret, and I'm not supposed to tell you this, but there are more ratings than just 5 stars and 1 star! I know! Weird, huh? Don't let the Internet Overlords hear that I told you about them, fellow anon. Now run! I can't hold them off for long!

Anyway, if it's a well-designed game with no major flaws, but isn't the most fun gameplay-wise, it deserves.... oh, say, three stars. Like this.
One star is the lowest possible rating, and should be reserved for stuff that's actually broken.

(Rating games as an anon is dumb, too. Make your own account if you want to rate things. Or I guess you could take this name, it's kinda dumb. So it would suit you!)

That should be "broken" as in gameplay-wise. If you actually can't get a game to work for some reason, "no rating" is the way to go. You can't really judge the quality of the game if you had a library problem that kept you from ever seeing it, right? Here's how I see it:

0 stars: Did not start, opinion withheld.
1 star : Very unpleasant experience, all around. Broken gameplay, ear-rending sound, awful color schemes, bad interface, etc.
2 stars: Poor experience, not recommended. Probably nothing majorly wrong, but may have very little gameplay and be more of a techdemo at the moment.
3 stars: If this is the sort of game you're looking for, then this might be a game for you! (IE nothing special.)
4 stars: A superior example of its type. Worth checking out.
5 stars: A top-shelf game, among the standouts at the top of the LGT.

AssaultCube might actually deserve four stars by your review, rather than three, come to think of it. I ought to give it a go one of these days.

How about just rating as one sees fit? If Draconi can happily give a game like this 5 stars, then what's to stop anyone else from being brutally honest about it? There's no point getting upset on behalf of the poor defenceless games, i'm sure they can take it. Don't attempt to inflict your rating guidelines on others but do feel free to go ahead and download the game for your own review and rating, you can even sign up if you dislike anonymous posting so much.

Good game for low end systems posted by releppes @ 74.39.135.225 on Apr 21 2009 8:08 PM 4444

This is a nice revamp of the graphics/mod to Cube. The maps and weapons look and sound great. As others have pointed out, this is just another (dime a dozen) fast paced run and shoot FPS game. Compared to the original Doom, I think the graphics are better. I give it AC 4 stars for having nice graphics with an easy install. It's a great game for taking advantage of older hardware.

However, I became bored with the game quickly. Not because the game is bad, but because it's just another Doom remake. I could not play the game long enough to notice or appreciate any differences. The game takes a very old school approach to FPS gaming. Which is good in that it keeps things simple. Bad in that there's nothing new.

When you read reviews about Cube (or any other remake), you often get feedback on how one would improve the game. Those improvements are often criticized because the developers goals were to avoid feature creep. That is commendable, however lack of originality also leads to boring. Unfortunately, that's how I see Assault Cube. Its a good game in a has been world.

Since I'm no different, I'll give my 2 cents on features I'd like to see:

  • I think there should be a silent movement mode. Or better yet, movement speed should proportionately affect sound of movement.
  • There should be a distinction in range and effectiveness of weapons. I'd rather have a few well balanced weapons, then many weapons that vary in strength. To me, having less weapons to deal with is all part of the keep it simple principal.
  • Movement should affect accuracy. When moving, accuracy should be compromised.

It's easy to list features one would like to see, but then one runs the risk of introducing feature creep. AC follows the same principals as Cube and that's with keeping things simple. So if the implementation of realism features is frowned upon, then I'd rather see some of the features in the game removed (ie: make it more simple). As one reviewer put it, crouching as it's implemented is pretty lame. The duel pistols seem out of place to me. The weapon power up in Doom is a better concept.

When I saw 1.0 and changelog I was thinking that they bringed it to some playable state. I can even play game with poor quality, but this game is so primitive, the only visible improvement for me is 'crouching'. There is still no aiming, no running, no slow (silent) moving), no special switches or tunnels, the only positive thing I can tell about this its speed(comparing to True Combat Elite) and that its OpenSource. After so many years when I see "1.0" release for soemthing like it, I really can expect much more. Original Cube was much more better in mine opinion. If somebody want play really good FPS like c-s and doesnt fear CSS(closed source software), I can recommend cs16-nonsteam or free mod to Enemy Terrirtory(also free) called True Combat Elite, which is much more realistic than C-S(and Free as in beer), but much more resource hungry and less modable than Half-Life engine. We have so many quick and high quality(playablility/graphics) Quake/Unreal clones like Warsow or Temulous, so its srange that after so many years we doesnt has really good OS Counter Strike clone :/

I guess you played the game one hour and now you think you "know" it. To get an idea, see http://assault.cubers.net/docs/v1.0/history.html

> There is still no aiming, no running, no slow (silent) moving), no special switches or tunnels, the only positive thing I can tell about this its speed(comparing to True Combat Elite) and that its OpenSource.

So.. let me think about your negative points:

  • No aminig
  • No running
  • No silent crouching
  • No special switches or tunnels

Do you really think the dev's couldn't code that in like 5 mintues? All your above points have been considered but weren't implemented because the devs didn't wanted to break the good gameplay:

  • No aiming: Do you suggest an "aim mode" for every weapon? That would slow down the whole game.
  • No running: Why should there be a running mode? Again, making separate speed levels slows down the game. What is the benefit for the gameplay?
  • No silent crouching? Again, get a clue. ALL footsteps (including crouching) are only played within a radius of 6 cube units to ensure fast gameplay and avoid campers listening for footsteps, as requestd by pro gamers.
  • No special switches or tunnels. What is the benefit? I don't see why "special switches" or "tunnels" would enhance the gamplay in a _major_ way.
  • Seriously, your bs sounds like "it is not the same as CS/TCE, therefore it sucks". Ever thought about the gameplay consequences of these features?

    > After so many years when I see "1.0" release for soemthing like it, I really can expect much more.

Again, get a clue @ http://assault.cubers.net/docs/v1.0/history.html The fact that _you_ don't see a change means like.. nothing? Just ask any other AC player who played it more than 1 hour.

    > Original Cube was much more better in mine opinion.

Cube is like a different genre of FPS?

    > If somebody want play really good FPS like c-s and doesnt fear CSS(closed source software), I can recommend cs16-nonsteam or free mod to Enemy Terrirtory(also free) called True Combat Elite, which is much more realistic than C-S(and Free as in beer), but much more resource hungry and less modable than Half-Life engine. Your last statement hits the point. See, AC is not meant to be a realistic game, nor is it a CS clone. You see AC as CS clone and therefore you conclude it sucks. I don't think such a comparision of different genres is fair at all.

That is assuming CounterStrike (it's not c-s...) is a good game. I am of the opinion that it's not.

It needs different sounds for the guns though. Cube sounds don't work well with this since it's not a pure charge-guns-blazing game, And the grenade could use an improvement. I think it should hit wider areas. It's pretty active right now and that's good. More levels would be nice too.
