Adonthell Screenshot 2D graphical RPG game

Adonthell is an open-source 2D graphical role playing game, in development. It is inspired by old video game console RPGs like Final Fantasy, Zelda, Secret of Mana etc. Currently we have a working mapengine (which will get a major overhaul in the next release), a working dialogue system and limited interaction with items on the map. Eventually we will add extensive item functionality (picking up, buying, selling, using etc..) and then we will add some kind of fighting system.

  A really nice adventure! posted by Dark_Elf_7 @ 77.49.125.191 on Oct 1 2009 10:08 PM 55555
Despite the fact that it's an adventure, not an RPG, it's really cool!!!

I've played a couple of times Waste's Edge... it's a really nice game, even being so short. I would love to see more games done from this engine.
It had a interesting plot, a RPG without fighting but with a cool story... like a visual novel. It made me remind the old spanish "The Abbey of Crime" videogame.

I liked the fact that all the NPC can move around the place and you can follow them ...they are not just disappearing after leaving the screen, sometimes you have to search for the NPC around the town. You can watch the barman serving beers in the tables and such. They talk sometimes some random sentences for themselves...
I'm looking forward to see how would be future releases... day/night cycle could be a nice addition, making the NPCs behave differently (some go sleep, some start working in the night..) ...it would be really cool to be able to watch the activity of a town full of NPCs interacting.

The text above suggests that it is not a "game" yet, but more of a techdemo. Is that (still) true or does it have full gameplay?

So far there's still only the Waste's Edge demo game available, which is missing a lot of features you'd expect from a RPG. Other than that it's fully playable though and should fill out an afternoon.

Work on the next-gen engine and a new (demo) game is in progress. Details are available on our Wiki.

The playable demo is a fun short diversion. Try it out.

This progress is great. Adonthell has been fallow for too many years, I'm glad it is been more actively worked on again. Now if only some person would write some more games to go with it, Wastes Edge is OK but I already played it twice. Oh wait I said I was going to write a RPG or maybe two using the Adonthell engine. If I'm really tricky I could have one done by December 2008 and then another by December 2009. At the Moment my progress is taking many baby steps.

  Help!!! I can't play posted by Anonymous @ 70.80.229.190 on Jun 23 2006 5:24 PM
I am new to Linux, I need help. I installed the game. If I try to start the game (by executing the /usr/adonthell) I get the error that it cannot find the python2.2 library. I know I have the python2.3 library. I tried installing the 2.2 library but it does'nt seem to have worked. Can someone help me?

Which version of Adonthell did you install and which distro are you using? What's the exact error message.

Is your problem similar to http://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?func=detailitem&item_id=102246 perhaps? Then try the solution described there.

If that doesn't work (or if you need more assistance, please mail me directly and I'll see what I can do)

  Really great posted by Kess @ 130.243.211.158 on Mar 16 2006 1:39 PM 55555
Well, I haven't played it for a while now, but it really is one of my most favourite games! It has such a good feel. Well, this 'review' is short, so I'll just add my thoughts on a previous comment/review. That a forum would be good for Adonthell, I agree. Mailing lists and IRChats are wonderous things, but a forum is a great place for casual users to stop by.

My dreams for and of the Adonthell project: aside from getting a forum, I dream of Adonthell ever having a quite high quality on (hi)story and dialogue, and that it is easy to modify/script your own adventures. Oh, I also dream of being able to help in some way in the future, perhaps by doing a Swedish translation.

*hugs*, a really great game in my mind!

p. s. It's great that you have a wiki now! ^^

There is a little forum, but it didn't get much attention. Probably because the link is a little hidden in the contact section of the website.

For those interested in watching development or helping with it, the aforementioned Wiki is located at http://adonthell.berlios.de/doc/. (Note that you'll have to create an account before you can edit, otherwise we'd have been overrun by spambots a long time ago)

Well I saw it under windows OS anyways (sort of defeats my goal to eliminate windows)- one day I'll actually install a game in Linux and it will run. Game looks good, 4 starts because I couldn't run it under Linux - I think more effort should go into Linux installs.

First time I try this game and very impressed ! Compiles well (but not without warnings).
Usually I have some problems with sound in games (still don't understand why) but NOT in THIS game ! Graphics are nice but the game is not that smooth and I think developers could think about it. So the game works very well for me : 5 stars ! Keep up the good work !!!

  Nice.. posted by Mishura @ 68.91.15.156 on Apr 21 2005 11:07 PM 4444
I've played this awhile back and it is interesting. Good story. Good potential. I also like the artwork in it as well (not too often you can say that to a F/OSS game! except Wesnoth..)

I'd like to see some kind of battle system later on and maybe the ability to create mods (like NWN mods, not TCs) or adventures using the graphics and engine w/o having to resort to writing alot of code (scripting is ok). Maybe a battle system similar to Final Fantasy.. or Zelda would work nicely.

**Note: 4 stars because it feels incomplete (Although the story isn't really.. and its good). With a few added features this can easily bump up to 5 stars.
