Debian Woody version posted by lightspeed @ 66.25.14.98 on Mar 31 2003 9:22 PM 4444
The version for Debian Woody installs nicely. Graphics and music are good, gameplay is pretty original. It would be a plus if the client would start a server automatically when none are availible online. The controls also seem a bit non-intuitive. Joystick support would make this a great network game for younger kids (and it's nonviolent to boot.)

Thanks for your comment. Joysticks are supported. The other points where added to the todo list. (The problem with the keyboard setting is that PC keyboards have trouble with detecting multiple key presses - this is why one must take care choosing the players controls... - of course the best solution would be to allow customization of the controls without source code editing and compilation ;-)

But anyway we need intuitive default settings - feel free the suggest your favourite settings !

    My favourite (from old days):

    Player 1:
    Up: q Down: a Left: o Right: p (non-intuitive I guess ;-)
    Player 2:
cursor keys on number block (problematic with laptops)

    The current hard-coded settings

Personally, I think it sounds pretty interesting, but I'm not about to upgrade my compiler just for the DOPE++ thing, which apparently wants a 3.X version of g++. Can't speak for anyone else tho.
Good luck with the project, anyways, Linux can always do with more varied games.

Thanks for your comment. We know that the gcc3 dependency is a problem for many people but that is why we release binaries. And C++ developers should IMHO use gcc3 anyway.

Currently a server is running (2002-10-18 16:30UTC to perhaps 17:30 UTC)

There are millions of computers out there loaded with gcc 2.x and glibc 2.1.x or 2.2.x, and it isn't always a simple option to upgrade.

Though if you provide glibc 2.x i386 compatible binaries, that's fine.

I am a bit new to linux but is would seem that i have gcc 4 but the configure script for DOPE++ complains my compiler is to old. Maybe revise the code that checks the version number of gcc [or maybe i'm mistaken]? (i couldn't do it as i can merely write a loop in bash ;) i tried to work around it by replacing the 'exit's by 'echo's and all went fine untill it asked for libxml (which i think i did install) and i decided to leave the whole thing for another day). I am running Ubuntu Gutsy on a Intel Core2Duo machine and trying to compile DOPE++ 0.1.0
    terminal output:
    (./configure)
    ...
    checking for g++... g++
checking whether we are using the GNU C++ compiler... yes
checking whether g++ accepts -g... yes
checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... g++ -E
checking for gcc version >=3.x... configure: error: gcc is too old - we need gcc >=3
    hannes@hannesu:~/bin/dope-0.1.0$ gcc --version
    gcc (GCC) 4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)
