What is LGP's next game?   4 Sep 05 21:48
 posted by bobz
Hey, look:
Linux Game Publishing is excited to announce a new competition!
We have a title which has been under heavy development and will go into beta in the next few weeks. There will be three competitions for this game, the first starting today.
Guess the game. Click on the link to see an image of the game hidden behind a random image. Over time the random image will be removed revealing the real image beneath. The first person to guess the title will win a copy of the game.
As soon as someone guesses the game, we will announce the other two competitions.
Good Luck!

Well. I see something completely different (in the same spots though). I guess what you see is a lot about what kind of game you'd like to get ;)

Obviously it's X-Gold from egosoft.

That's what the big surprise is? X-Gold? I wish LGP would port some games that people actually care about for a change. I guess they probably don't have the money to license something good, but really...a little-known game from two years ago? They might as well have ported Tradewars, at least someone would have heard of it.

Really? And which games would that be that people would "care about"?

Personally, I "care about" this game that they are porting, and am actually extremely excited that it's coming to Linux. I've been wanting a game like this on Linux for a long time (and no, the ports of ancient "liberated" games like Freespace 2, and opensource alternatives are not the same).

I'll certainly be buying this game. I think it was an excellent choice for LGP to port.

Interesting...that makes two posts that you've weighed in on how great a company LGP is and how you're pledging your support to them. Anonymously, at that. I don't suppose, perhaps, that you might be an employee?

No. Why? Because you only think that LGP employees can support LGP?

No, as the guy at slashdot pointed out, it's X2. But anyway, there is no really big difference between those two, although the fans of the game would object, of course.

Indeed. A shame it isn't of the not-yet-out X3. That a one is going to be on the Xbox, so they've actually had to improve the interface and whatnot. Apparently the economy is actually going to (*shock*) change dynamically too. It might be the first of the series that I buy, since I was disappointed with the last ones, but it's a shame I'll have to use it on the Windows.

my analysis posted by scarlet @ 59.167.27.6 on Sep 6 2005 6:28 AM
I'm looking at a nicely enhanced image of it here (as I imagine a lot of other people are doing). I can see a sillhoette of a person in the bottom right corner and a palm tree sillhoette in the left side. From what it looks like, this image has been not only masked with random crap, but it has also been cut up into a 4*4 grid and scrambled... I can see clear brickwork in 4 of the squares (1,1), (1,2), (2,1), (2,3) but it doesn't really match up. I can also see circular objects that look like semicircles with holes in them in (3,1) and (3,2). All in all it's a very weird image even when enhanced a hell of a lot. Anyway, if this information can help anyone make the right guess then they are welcome to it. I'd put the image itself up on the net but I have nowhere to host it.

Well, for those interested, I managed to edit the current (Mon Sep 5 18:01:39) image and make it clearer using an older version by pixel differences. I still can't see much, but I believe there are clowns involved in this game. Look at
http://www.geocities.com/simpoir/result.jpg
I have hilighted what I see. And you, what do you see?

Well, I personally don't see any clowns here, but if it really turns out to be clowns or anything cartoonish, then it just has to be ... TADAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! ... Serious Sam 2! Yeah! 8-) Given that Icculus already started (and abandoned again, obviously) inital ports of Serious Sam: TFE & TSE back then, it might actually happen this time.

I ran some statistical filters and junk on this. I've got a good lo-res rendering here. Lots of detail, but I can't tell what most of it is. A lot clearer than what I came up with yesterday, though.

The process is quite easy, download a picture, wait a few hours, download another picture, run diff between those pics and use the diff as alphachannel for the later pic, play a bit around with the contrast for the diff to adopt for the jpg artefacts and you have some of the images pixels, now you only need to enlarge the pixels and you are done. After that you have to rearange the picture, since its cutted into 4x4 pieces and mixed, once done you get something like decode.jpg, not as pretty as that thing that was posted on slashdot, but enough to guess the game correctly :) The programm I used for this process was imagedecode.cxx, but it should be doable in Gimp too.

Alright Mikey, I'll bite. I guess now that you're off Slashdot you don't have much opportunity to troll any more. Does the phrase "censorware" sound familiar to you at all? If not, I suggest you take a look into your own history...you know, the part where you performed a hostile takeover of the domain and essentially killed off the site out of spite. Never mind the numerous complaints that led to your dismissal from Slashdot. Go ahead and shoot that down if you like, anyone with an ounce of awareness in their heads knows that it's unwise to invest any trust or faith in you. Just in case this pathological liar tries to claim it never happened, I direct the casual reader to the following: http://web.archive.org/web/20010716063335/http://censorware.net/index.html Eagerly awaiting your nonsensical drivel of a reply, Simms.

Yeah, they aren't the same person, it's just a coincidence that they happen to have the same name. Fear not, it's not like this Michael would run around dupe porting games or anything. :-D

But let's not let this bother us. This is kinda hilarious actually so it would be a shame if it had to come to the end now. Popcorn anyone? ;-)

Easy to dismiss that. Ive never worked for slashdot, I didnt know much about the guy on there who had the same name as me, I only heard of him when he emailed me personally about a game he ordered from tux games that was a bit late - but fair enough if you have a serious beef against him, thats fine, but - it aint me! Does this mean Im out of your bad books now? {:-)

You do know that they are not the same people, right? Michael SIMMS (two Ms) is the LGP Michael, and Michael SIMS is the Slashdot guy.

Michael Simms is a nice guy, who's always been extremely kind and professional when I've spoken with him. I'm not sure where you guys get all of this ill will and anger from, but it's getting ridiculous. A handful of you seem to flame the guy every time he tries to bring you a game to Linux. That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

  Re: 5816 posted by trick @ 80.202.238.17 on Sep 5 2005 7:24 AM
LGP was just the publisher, they didn't port it. Actually, according to a comment (5791) to the post about the cancellation, LGP did spend time making a Linux version of DirectPlay (or somesuch), but when it was done Runesoft decided they couldn't make the game use LGPs solution in time. Assuming this story is true, 1. LGP is not to blame, and 2. If Runesoft were to use LGPs solution, it would hold back the release of the game even further, maybe indefinitely, because of the difficulties for Runesoft to port the code to use it. Without having seen any code I don't want to comment on that, but consider this: A game without multiplayer is better than no game at all, no ? Also, maybe multiplayer will be added in a future patch.

OK, Im going to post a single post about this, and Im not going to say any more on the subject except to clarify questions people have, I dont want to get involved in a flame war or the like, but people are making random guesses, some with some information some without. Id rather clear the air on this one once and for all.

The whole story:

1 ) Epic asked us to do the publishing for Northland, Knights, and Software Tycoon, we signed a contract to that effect. We were ONLY publishing, no coding was involved for us, which was good as all our people are VERY busy right now on other projects.
2 ) Epic later said that they couldnt do the multiplayer versions as it was too complex to port
3 ) We said we would never publish an incomplete game, and we had signed a contract for a complete game, they must port the networking layer
4 ) Epic said that this was impossible for them.
5 ) We then told epic we would try and help them out, as a good faith gesture, by writing them a wrapper for Directplay to have it so they could use the wrapper and OpenPlay and just drop that into a DirectPlay game and it works on Linux. Not network compatable with Windows, but effectively zero coding for them, allowing them to get a game to market.
6 ) As we had signed a contract for a complete game, we had zero spare resources for coding on it, so I decided to hire a contractor to do it, at LGP's expense, so the game would happen.
7 ) We had some problems, we hired 4 different contractors to do the job over a persiod of 12 months, and all of them bailed on the project.
8 ) We finally completed the project internally in the end, and 3 months or so ago we delivered the network wrapper to Epic (now Runesoft)
9 ) Epic told us they couldnt impliment it in Northland, as they had already removed the network code, making it more work than it was worth to them to put it back in
10) We told epic we would never release a half complete game, but if they wanted us to, we would release them from the contract without penalty,
11) This option was accepted by Epic
12) We offered this option to Epic/Runesoft so they could at least get a game they considered OK for the market released, even if we didnt. It was NEVER going to pass our quality control, they were never going to add in the network layer, so it was a deadlock, and Id rather see more games out there for Linux, than tie up a game and refuse to have it released just so LGP can make more money - I created LGP to make games, not to stop them! I wont put the LGP name on the box, but I will encourage people who dont care about networking to buy it.

i've bought a couple of games in the old loki times which was railroad tycoon, alien crossfire, alpha centauri, mindrover and kohan IS. but sadly the most games of lgp are not the games i like to play with exception of northland, but now i have to order it from runesoft somewhere in the future. well, i'm still in the hope that someday a nice native football (aka soccer) manager for linux will become reality. or good old m.a.x part one ;)

Well <tux games hat on> We'll be selling it at Tux Games.<change to LGP hat>For football games, we arent likely to get any, they all come with huge licensing fees that would be out of our league Im afraid. However if a good one at the right price came along, we'd snap it up. If you liked Kohan and Alpha Centauri though, you'll like Majesty.

at least me don't care about real names (players & clubs) on football games. if everyone could edit the names of players and clubs (incl. own logo perhaps), i think a lot would be happy enough. a few years ago some guys was going to code a football game, but never heard any of them since those days.

i've played the demo of majesty, but i didn't liked it very much. anyway, sooner or later there will be more big games beside the great ones that the community is coding.
