Got this bit from ps3fourms.com:

Here are the interviews with Kawanishi. His title is 'Director Software Platform Development, Director Network Systems Development'.
http://watch.impress.co.jp/game/docs/20060511/ps3.htm
http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/games/art...1/news058.html
In a nutshell, the interviews were actually quite tough, asking the difficult questions, but in the usual polite Japanese way. His answers to 2 SKUs, no HDMI for one SKU, high price, etc. are similar to the answers by other SCE executives, so that's boring.
Interesting parts under debate
Q: You were inspired by Wii controller, right? (laughter)
A: No no. (laughter) We've thought about it a long time. In fact we had thought about it for the PSP.
-Software can be started from SD card or memory stick. So we are allowing individual developement, not just the studios.
-PS3 will be installed with Linux, so programming in Linux is possible.
-It is now possible for individuals who do not want to sign a licence agreement to make PS3 content of their own.
-Summary: Of course licensed developers will get technical support, official tools, official SDK, official debug kits, everything that a studio paying for the license will expect. Non-licensed individual Linux developers won't have that benefit. |
This sounds insanely good for happypenguin developers. :) What's your bets on this? _________________ Make me happy and port NWN2 to linux |

I have also been hearing about PS3 suporting Linux. I may actually end up buying a console afterall. _________________ Everyone knows that Windows operating systems are just as secure as most Linux distributions, when shielded with a anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, firewall and, preferably, disconnected from the Internet. |

| How much you want to bet it runs on Linux. It wouldn't surprise me. |

Oooh Ahhhh. That sounds cool. Wait til a million linux developers get a hold of it. Open source tools, debug kits, here we come. |

It is confirmed to be shipped with it running the linux kernel on the HDD that comes with it. Mouse and keyboard supported ofcourse. (not included).
Adding a usb SATA HDD of some 320GB to it is easily made.
Not to forget the sheer power of this beast. ...playing wesnoth in HD would be cool. *hint hint to devs* _________________ Make me happy and port NWN2 to linux |

| PS3 was on the cards as my next computer, but looking at the latest box design. The USB ports have been removed from the back of the machine, and the additional network ports have been removed. |

That's a drawback for sure. No 2xHDMI either. It wont be that mediahub it touted to be at E3 2005. Still, I think it has a lot to go for, so I hope it will take off, because I am buying one when it's out.
Not buying it because of how it looks? How shallow are you? ;)
The design of the box is ok with me though.
Being able to tinker with it in linux will be a good add-on to playing games with it. _________________ Make me happy and port NWN2 to linux |

I'd be much happier about using the PS3 as a linux machine if Sony were to open-source the drivers that the system will have to use - although knowing Sony, I'd say that's unlikely.
Pity really, because I'm now more inclined to go get a Wii when they come out than pay the extra for a PS3 (I'd probably have got an XBox 360 by then if Microsoft weren't involved). |

Software from Sony was not that good:

lets hope the HW doesn't have similar features ;) |

The controller's cool, but not even high definition, that won't work for me. I watch more movies than play games anymore, so the PS3 will be worth it considering it has blue ray. I think I'll still have to fork over the extra hundred to get HDMI though. Apparently it won't work on the lower cost model, and it has something to do with watching movies. All things considered, it's still a lot of machine for the money and I know they're losing money on it. |

| I'd have to shell out for new PS3 and HD tv - I like my gaming, but I'll probably wait a few years for that combo! |

Yeah. I'll get one and then the other. The question is, which one to get first? I guess the PS3 makes the most sense. Prices will probably fall faster on hdtvs so waiting on that would be the best bet. I wish I was into more game genres. I like racing car games and that's about it. I don't like rpgs or strategy. I'll probably wait about a year before I get either one. |

I can't say I'm *that* exited about HD in consoles, to be brutally honest. After all, every single console I've ever owned (and also every computer until about 1990) ran on my PAL tv. There was a small improvement when it changed from an RF to a SCART connection, but thats about it. So if I've been happy for more than 25 YEARS with the resolution so far, I'm sure a few more won't bother me.
Of course, I also thought that 5 1/4 disks were amazingly fast at one point in time :-) |

Hmm, giving away our age are we? Those were the days. I had a radio shack color computer and a tape recorder around 1980. I can't say it wasn't much less fun than it is now, really. I still type in a program and later lose it from a crash, and I still don't really care when it happens. |
