Angry Pixels

On February 20 2003, Linux Game Publishing announced that it would sponsor the creation of a new company for the development of games for Linux. We've created this page to track the progess of the new company as it chooses a name, comes up with a game idea, and designs and develops that game.
The Team:
  • Steve Baker: Friend and mentor to open source game developers everywhere, he brought us Tux: A Quest For Herring back in the day, before 3D games for Linux were commonplace. I hear he really likes tetris clones, too.
  • Bruno Costa is 26 years old and lives in Algarve, Portugal. He says, "I really enjoy coding math and physics, real world effects simulations, 2D and 3D graphics, image and signals processing, algorithms. Code optimization is something I also like, as solving problems."
  • Bob Ham started composing computer music on his Atari ST. Later he switched to a PC running Windows. "About a year or so ago I vowed to myself I wouldn't use Windows to make music again. Unfortunately, the state of linux audio apps was such that I couldn't make music in linux the way I did in windows (ie, easily :) so I've been doing something about it."
  • Bill Kendrick: If you haven't heard of the prolific Mr. Kendrick, you're not a real Linux gamer.
  • Sean Middleditch is particularly fond of AI, scripting and user interface useability. The 19 year old from Michigan is the youngest member of the group.
  • Andrew Nelson: The quiet, mysterious one. Zero web presence. No open source credits. Describes himself as a jack-of-all-trades. Who is this International Man of Mystery?
  • Jacek Poplawski: A #gametome regular, and a darn good programmer despite that.
  • Matt Wilson: I had a roommate named Matt Wilson once....

The newly-named Angry Pixels seeks artists and musicians - 31 Mar 03 17:46
Although "LGP Game Development Company" was pretty catchy, the team has renamed itself "Angry Pixels".

15 days and 816 email messages since the formation of this group, Angry Pixels has a name, a business model, a web site (http://www.angry-pixels.com) and most importantly, an idea for a game. An idea that has me really, really excited to play it. Although the design phase is only just beginning, much of the game detail has already been defined by the developers, and it sounds incredibly promising. Did I mention I'm really really excited? Although I have sworn a blood oath not to reveal details of the game, I can share this much with you: it is not a first-person shooter.

It is also time to bring some new team members into the fold. Angry Pixels is now accepting applications for artists and musicians, so you're inclined in those directions, this is your chance to enter the glamorous world of video game development. Email applications@angry-pixels.com with the following information:

  • Your Name
  • An overview of your experience
  • An example of your art or music skills in a format that's easily read with a web browser or free software.
  • Your views on Linux, on computer games, and on what you would like to get out of joining the team.
Complete details are posted at http://www.angry-pixels.com/artists.php.

Oops - 19 Mar 03 17:03
Bruno Costa does not, in fact, have enough graphics cred to kill a man. The homepage link I originally posted for Mr. Costa was incorrect. In other news, Andrew Nelson is not the quiet, mysterious one.
Updated bios Real Soon.

Presenting the LGP game development company - 17 Mar 03 21:30
The final eight team members have been chosen. Shift your vision left slightly for the list. Congratulations to all, now go do us proud!

Even more demos released at LGP - 17 Mar 03 14:20
Many more 2k demos have been made available on the LGP page. It's too hard to keep up, so I' m not going to mirror them here any longer.

Two more demos released - 13 Mar 03 21:28
Sean Middleditch has released a mark-and-sweep garbage collector and Pablo Barbachano sent in his 3D Sierpinsky object.
Headmaster Simms has revealed that the the final 8 team members will be chosen Monday, March 17.

Some 2k demos available - 13 Mar 03 18:08
Two of the 16 finalists have 'fessed up and made their 2k code entries available to the world:
Bill Kendrick wrote 2k Tetris. Jacek Poplawski submitted a 3D morphing fruit demo.

16 finalists chosen - 13 Mar 03 11:10
All but 16 applicants have been eliminated. LGP is contacting those who didn't make it, and sending additional questions to those who remain. After the questions have been answered, only the swimsuit competition remains before the final team is chosen.

Ok, there's no swimsuit competition.

Dev company applications closed - 11 Mar 03 14:20
Uncle Michael reports that they're no longer accepting applications for LGP's game development company project. The applications will be reviewed over the next few days. Interestingly, about half of the applications had to be discarded because they were incomplete in one way or another. Nice going guys. :)
LGP wants your input about this project. Visit the new dev company website for more details.
